Court knocks Clarett, Williams from Draft
Ohio State's Maurice Clarett and Southern Cal's Mike Williams have been scratched from the NFL's draft board. An appeals court ruled in favor of the NFL today, overturning a a lower court's ruling that would have permitted them to enter the NFL Draft.

So the question now is: What happens to Williams and Clarett? Under NCAA rules, the players could have their universities apply for their reinstatement - provided the player repays every red cent of monies, loans, and bling any agent(s) may have fronted.

While the door remains open technically, ESPN.com reported Monday that neither Williams nor Clarett had been in contact with their respective programs.

For Williams, there's a little question of academic eligibility as it relates to enrollment and credit hours. No one knows for sure if Williams would even be academically eligible, as he has basically been a full-time NFL prospect rather than a full-time student.

For Clarett, there's the little issue of his complete lack of a relationship with Ohio State. The Buckeyes suspended Clarett last year and he hasn't been in contact with the coaching staff for some time.

What does the future hold for Clarett & Williams? In the words of Yoda, hard to see the future is. I suspect that we'll see Williams back in a Trojan uniform, even if he has to complete a full semester at summer school. For Maurice Clarett, I'm guessing a one year deal in the CFL, that way he would be able to enter next year's draft.

Gateway CEO offers $30 million for game between USC and LSU
It seems Ted Waitt, chairman and CEO of Gateway Inc., is just as unhappy about the split national championship as the majority of us. He has offered to give each school $10 million in scholarships for disadvantaged students if they'd play each other the weekend of Jan. 24-25. The winner would have gotten an additional $10 million in scholarships and $1 million in Gateway products.

There's only one problem, NCAA President Myles Brand has already turned the proposal down.

"It's just not as simple or easy as doing that," said Wally Renfro, the senior adviser to Brand. "Decisions about postseason football are made by the membership of the association. Those two institutions would not be able to make that decision in any event.

"Right now, by the bylaws, it couldn't happen."

And the NCAA wouldn't jump even with $30 million in scholarships up for grabs?

"No," Renfro said.

.. Maybe it's just me, but screw the NCAA bylaws.

How to fix the BCS and eliminate two champions
Over the past week I have heard two things above all else.

1) USC has won the national championship.
2) The Sugar Bowl and BCS mean nothing.

I have one question to ask everyone out there. What does the AP poll really mean? Why does the AP poll determine a national champion? When the BCS was created, why was the AP poll still left with the ability to crown a national champion other than the system created by college football?

No one will ever be happy with what happened this year, but I have a solution to end the split championships. While we function under the rule of the BCS system, the AP poll should not award a national championship. And if they feel they need to award one, then eliminate them from the BCS formula. The BCS is set up to award a national champion, it is NOT designed to change the opinions and force the AP poll to vote the same way the BCS does.

When Mike Tranghese and his BCS bretheren hole themselves up from the rest of the world come this April, this should be the issue at hand. How do you get rid of a second national championship? You get rid of the ability to award a second one. Please ESPN, Associated Press and the rest of the free world, the BCS is not going away and we are not getting a playoff. Please lay off and help it move forward.

If you have any comments that are not suitable for this message board, you may send me electronic mail.

Priest accused of bizarre fetish rituals
Advocate | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"A molestation charge against a Wyoming priest has brought forth allegations of a bizarre bondage ritual performed on men two decades ago in the basement of a small-town church. Several men have told investigators they allowed themselves to be stripped, blindfolded, suspended upside-down, whipped, and bound about the genitals while praying for penance, a prosecutor said Monday... The stories became public after Father Anthony Jablonowski pleaded no contest last week to a charge of taking indecent liberties with a 17-year-old boy in 1982... The priest's attorney, Dallas Laird, said Jablonowski likened the rituals to initiation rites in fraternities or the Marine Corps and suggested the men's memories of the incident may have gotten hazy with time."

Iraq mercenary former apartheid assassin

Bird Flu just waiting to fuck everything up
BBC | Submitted by: rtype
"Bird flu could develop into a threat big enough to overturn world order if it evolves to transfer directly from person to person, a UK scientist says. Dr John McCauley, of the Institute for Animal Health, said the virus could be 20 times worse than the 1918 pandemic. That is estimated to have killed 40 million people, with later influenza outbreaks also killing millions more. Dr McCauley said there was a realistic chance of the current avian flu virus evolving to threaten people directly... 'If it does - if the virus becomes adapted to man and can transmit efficiently - there'll be no point in selling a vaccine. You might as well give it away at that stage, because money would be meaningless. The world order would change.'"

Diebold finally starting to face the music
CNET News | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"California's Voting Systems and Procedures Panel grilled Diebold Election Systems President Bob Urosevich and an attorney for the company after releasing a blistering report that alleged the company violated state law by installing uncertified software on voting machines in four California counties... The panel could decide Wednesday or Thursday to recommend a variety of remedies, from decertifying some of Diebold's voting equipment to barring electronic voting methods altogether. 'Diebold marketed, sold and installed its TSx (voting machine) in these four California counties prior to full testing, prior to federal qualification, and without complying with the state certification program,' read a staff report on the investigation of Diebold Election Systems released Tuesday. An audit of all 17 California counties using the company's equipment, the report went on to say, 'discovered that Diebold had, in fact, installed uncertified software in all its client counties without notifying the Secretary of State as required by law, and that the software was not federally qualified in three client counties.'"

"Attorneys for Diebold Election Systems Inc. warned in late November that its use of uncertified vote-counting software in Alameda County violated California election law and broke its $12.7 million contract with Alameda County. Soon after, a review of internal legal memos obtained by the Oakland Tribune shows Diebold's attorneys at the Los Angeles office of Jones Day realized the McKinney, Texas-based firm also faced a threat of criminal charges and exile from California elections. Yet despite warnings from the state's chief elections officer, Diebold continued fielding poorly tested, faulty software and hardware in at least two of California's largest urban counties during the Super Tuesday primary, when e-voting temporarily broke down and voters were turned away at the polls."

Feds ordered to quit harassing marijuana club
San Jose Mercury News | Submitted by: shebink
"A federal judge on Wednesday sided with a Santa Cruz cannabis cooperative, issuing an order allowing pot to be grown for the sick and dying without fear of a raid by federal drug agents. San Jose U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel blocked federal agents from enforcing drug laws against the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Davenport, prompting founders Valerie and Michael Corral to immediately begin planting marijuana seeds for a fall harvest... The ruling marked the first lower court interpretation of a recent federal appeals court decision that crafted an exemption to federal drug laws for seriously ill patients who grow their own marijuana or get it for free... The Bush administration has argued that federal drug laws trump any state efforts to permit the use, possession or sale of marijuana, including California's 1996 voter-approved medicinal marijuana law."

Wife gets 25 years for attempted murder
Boston Globe | Submitted by: stoptional
"A woman who stabbed her husband during a game in which he was handcuffed and blindfolded was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in prison. Sheila Davalloo, of Pleasantville, was convicted in February of attempted murder after a nonjury trial... The Westchester County investigation began March 23, 2003, when Davalloo and Christos were engaged in a game in which Christos, blindfolded and handcuffed, was to guess what she was using to touch him. She took a 4-inch paring knife from the kitchen and stabbed him twice in the chest. Prosecutors said Davalloo pretended to call 911 and took Christos to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla only after he begged her. When she parked near the hospital, she took the knife and stabbed him a third time."

Former Scotland Yard cop urges drug legalization

"A visiting former Scotland Yard drugs boss is calling for all drugs, from marijuana and methamphetamines to cocaine and opiates, to be legalised. And the retired detective chief superintendent is going further, calling for state-sponsored hard drugs for addicts. Eddie Ellison said he believes prohibition on drugs is costing a fortune and helping no one but criminals involved with drug dealing. [Hear! Hear!] ... Heroin and other hard-drug users could be given subsidised drug doses, which would stop forcing them to commit crimes to finance their habits. Once the users had a guaranteed low-cost supply of the drug, they could get on with their lives, he said. Mr Ellison said a British heroin addict must steal about $5000 worth of goods a day to finance a $500-a-day habit - a habit the Government could supplement for about $1.25."

Scary TCP/IP vulnerability
Wire Services | Submitted by: optional
"The British government announced the vulnerability in core Internet technology on Tuesday. Left unaddressed, experts said, it could allow hackers to knock computers offline and broadly disrupt vital traffic-directing devices, called routers, that coordinate the flow of data among distant groups of computers... Paul Watson said he identified a method to reliably trick personal computers and routers into shutting down electronic conversations by resetting the machines remotely. Routers continually exchange important updates about the most efficient traffic routes between large networks. Continued successful attacks against routers can cause them to go into a standby mode, known as 'dampening,' that can persist for hours. Experts previously said such attacks could take between four years and 142 years to succeed because they require guessing a rotating number from roughly 4 billion possible combinations. Watson said he can guess the proper number with as few as four attempts, which can be accomplished within seconds."

'Toothing is a form of anonymous sex with strangers - usually on some form of transport or enclosed area such as a conference or training seminar,' says the 'Beginner's Guide To Toothing' on a Web site dedicated to the pursuit. It is made possible by Bluetooth technology which allows users to send phone contacts, pictures and messages to other Bluetooth-enabled equipment over a range of about 10 meters (yards)... 'Prior to the announcement, there was no consultation with professional organizations of archivists or historians,' the Chicago association noted in a statement this month. 'This is the first time since the National Archives and Records Administration was established as an independent agency that the process of nominating an archivist of the United States has not been open for public discussion and input.'"

Feds withheld Oklahoma City bombing video
Guardian UK | Submitted by: Doich
"A Secret Service document written shortly after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing described security video footage of the attack and witness testimony that suggested Timothy McVeigh may have had accomplices at the scene. 'Security video tapes from the area show the truck detonation 3 minutes and 6 seconds after the suspects exited the truck,' the Secret Service reported six days after the attack on a log of agents' activities and evidence in the Oklahoma investigation. The government has insisted McVeigh drove the truck himself and that it never had any video of the bombing or the scene of the Alfred P. Murrah building in the minutes before the April 19, 1995, explosion. Several investigators and prosecutors who worked the case told The Associated Press they had never seen video footage like that described in the Secret Service log."

Competitive drunk self-immolates
Newsday | Submitted by: whatever
"An intoxicated Davis Park man died after he lit a rug on fire and challenged his roommate to see who could stay in the house on Fire Island longer Saturday night, Suffolk County police said. Police said Thomas Woods, 59, ignited the rug in his house at 9 Driftwood Walk sometime before 8 p.m. As the fire spread, Woods fired one or two rounds from a pre-World War I Mauser pistol, said Det. Sgt. Ed Fandrey of the Suffolk County homicide squad. Police do not know why he fired the gun. When the fire began spreading dangerously, Woods' roommate, Rod Bennett, ran to a neighbor's house to call 911 a few minutes after 8 p.m. Volunteers from the Davis Park Fire Department responded, along with neighbors who tried to extinguish the blaze with garden hoses and anything else they could find. But it was too late."
